Connected Hearts

My photography journey began in my youth when my camera was a constant companion, capturing moments big and small, from everyday scenes to precious family gatherings. As the youngest in my family and an aunt from a young age, I found joy in documenting the growth and evolution of my nieces and nephews through my lens. Over time, what my young subjects once perceived as a nuisance has transformed into cherished memories frozen in time.

Encouraged by the special bond between my sister's twin daughters, Amanda and Amelia, I embarked on a project titled "Connected Hearts." Through this series, I aim to explore the delicate balance of individuality and unity inherent in the relationship between twins, particularly sisters sharing a deep connection. Drawing from my own experiences as a sister and my desire for a twin sibling, witnessing the progress of my identical twin nieces from childhood has been a fascinating and personal journey that I seek to capture and share through my photography.

Capturing them in their essence and seeing my sister's journey as a mother to twin daughters struck me. They are perceived as objects of curiosity, neglecting the difficult emotions a mother navigates in this sacred journey.

I became aware that she isn't the only one to feel this way as a mother when I came across the work of Sally Mann, a photographer famous for her portraits of her children in deep South America, who also faced the scrutiny of capturing her children's growth. It was a feeling that resonated deeply with me as my sister's narrative unfolded without the camera present.

Using similar analogue techniques to Mann, such as 35mm and 120mm film cameras, to give the images a ghostly quality, underscoring the intangible nature of their connection, Mann proposes a mystical unity that goes beyond mere resemblance, where the lines between individuality and shared existence blur into a dance of identity and relationship as sisters.

These photographs reflect the twins' profound and mysterious relationship, inviting viewers to embark on a soul-stirring journey exploring the mysteries of unity and the depth of shared souls.
